George Smith: There is a love story this morning
|
FRIDAY'S LIST . . . of beans 'n greens 'n other things:
HOW ABOUT a little love story with your morning coffee?
In the beginning, there is a lovely young lady by the name of Karen McKay working at a bank in Oneonta. At the other end of the story is Richard Shipman, in the early time of his 31 years with Alabama Power Company.
Shipman tells the story.
"I went into the bank to deposit my check," he recalls. "It was an Alabama Power Company check and I was in an Alabama Power Company truck. She asked me for an ID and I thought all that was kind of a hassle.
"She was really trying to find out where I was from. She had never seen me before."
She liked what she saw, he liked what he saw, and up and asked her about going to a movie and then a picnic with him on Sunday.
"She told me she would like to do that," says Shipman, "and I could pick her up after church Sunday afternoon.
"I don't know what she saw, but when she said that about church, I knew she was a winner. She loves the Lord."
The two were married 10 months later and the waltz is now in its 28th year.
BIRTHDAYS: Nov. 16 — Mildred Kines, Sandra McCarty, Adam Muns and Jimmy Fair; Nov. 17 — Hayden Pitts; Nov. 18 — Martha Brooks, Bill Cotton and Kelly Mayne; Nov. 20 — Diana Smith; Nov. 21 — Teresa White and Dana Gray; Nov. 22 — Wendy Woosley and Chris Ferguson.
A SPECIAL "Happy" for "Mama" Lillaree Miller of Jacksonville who celebrated Number 95 this past Sunday with some 40-plus kin and friends applauding in a surprise party.
The party was at the Western Sizzlin in Oxford on Saturday night and some came from as far away as Maryland and West Virginia to honor a really nice lady.
If the name rings a bell, I wrote about Lillaree and her tea cakes a few months back. Dozens of you now have her recipe.
TOP TEEN: The folks around Pleasant Valley High School would like for you to meet one of their finest, Russ Barnwell, a senior with a 30 on his ACT and a 4.0 GPA on his books.
There's leadership here, too.
Russ is president of the Senior Beta Club (honor society), president of the Spanish Club, vice-president of the Class of '09, editor of the Yearbook, captain of the Scholars Bowl (county champs, state finalists), and chaplain of the Student Council.
He is also lieutenant governor of the district Key Club and has been voted Most Dependable in the school's Who's Who.
The goal is a degree in Political Science at Huntingdon College and then law school at the University of Alabama.
Proud parents are Dale and Jan Barnwell, Angel Drive, Jacksonville.
Take a bow, young man . . .
FINALLY, there's a small change here in that this column, Friday's List, will now move to Wednesday and will, of course, be known as Wednesday's List.
Thanks for the visit.
