George Smith: This pony is getting very tired

11-07-2008

FRIDAY'S LIST …. of beans 'n greens 'n other things:

I'VE BEEN on this pony before, but there was another wreck Wednesday at the intersection of U.S. 431 and Alabama 21.

I use that route at least twice a day, and accidents there are not uncommon.

Basically, it is a well-designed intersection, and a guess is carelessness is mostly at cause. But there is — as I've mentioned before — a blind left turn on green if:

1. You're headed south and wish to turn into Lagarde Park.

2. If, at the same time, huge trucks are stopped in the left turn heading north.

This flat out should be a "turn arrow" only, not yield on green.

WE HAD a story this week about Circuit City closing its Anniston location.

I happen to be a big fan with a rather long history of patronage over the years.

What kept me going back is friendly people, prompt service, the quick and efficient manner in which Circuit City backed its products.

This one I'm going to miss.

BIRTHDAYS: Nov. 2 — Bob Crisp; Nov. 4 — Eyvonne Dover and Eddie Nunnelley; Nov. 7 — Ricky Watson and Steven Newell; Nov. 8 — Mildred Hanes and Chong Abbey.

IF YOU'RE kin or friend to Frank Turner Sr., who calls Choccolocco Valley home, you might want to drop by Harmony Baptist Church Sunday afternoon to wish him a happy 90th birthday.

Frank hits that mark on Nov. 16, but early wishes are just as nice. Hours are from 2 to 4 p.m. for a veteran of World War II . . . a hero and of a Greater Generation.

Hope you have a bunch more, sir . . .

TOP TEEN: Meet Michelle Lynn Chesnut, a senior at Oxford High School, where she ranks in the top five in the Class of '09, is president of the National Honor Society, and a member of Mu Alpha Theta (math honor society).

And you should hear this young lady sing.

Often asked to open Oxford High football games by singing the national anthem, Michelle is captain of the school's "Snow Choir," and participates in singing and dancing performances for the school and the community. She is also a jazz and ballet dancer.

In her "spare" time, she volunteers for the American Cancer Society's "Relay For Life" and Special Olympics.

Michelle is president of St. Mark's United Methodist Youth Group and has made two mission trips to Ecuador.

Headed for the University of Alabama in the fall of '09, she will work toward an engineering degree.

"Michelle is such a delightful young lady with a cheerful attitude and a smile on her face," says senior counselor Glenda Knight. "She is kind and considerate of everyone and has a warm and genuine personality."

Proud parents are Mark and Lisa Chesnut. Take a bow, young lady.
