George Smith: Who said it? It was 'Bashful Brother Oswald'

FRIDAY'S LIST ... of beans 'n greens 'n other things:
OK, THIRD and final round with Jeanne Pruett of Pell City who became a major country music star back in the '70s, burning the charts with her biggest hit "Satin Sheets."
It started when I mistakenly (knowing better) credited "Satin Sheets" to Jeannie C. Riley ... of "Harper Valley PTA" fame.
Someone mailed Jeanne Pruett my "I goofed" column, and she was delighted and called this past week to say "Thanks." And to add "This old gal will take all the ink she can get."
Jeanne, who lives near Nashville, is sort of semi-retired, spends a lot of time booking shows for others and doing occasional stints herself.
She also had the answer to my question as to who used "Lordy, I feel so unnecessary" during stage appearances on the Grand Ole Opry.
A dozen or so of you called to say it was "Stringbean," (David Akeman), who did a comedy act on the Opry.
Jeanne says you are wrong, that it was Oswald Kirby, better known as "Bashful Brother Oswald," who played a masterful dobro in Roy Acuff's band.
My memory told me it was Oswald, but after goofing on "Satin Sheets" I was a bit leery, bowing to all you "know-it-alls," who said Stringbean.
Jeanne was there, she knows, she says "Brother Oswald."
BIRTHDAYS: Oct. 12 — Brent McCarty and Sammy Pressley; Oct. 13 — Amy Cotton Brillhart, Betty Vice and Courtney Leverette; Oct. 14 — Payton Harris and Zoey Elizabeth Hall; Oct. 16 — LaShon Wilson; Oct. 17 — Allison Fezell.
TOP TEEN: Meet Elizabeth Case, a senior at Jacksonville High School where her 4.0 GPA and a high PSAT score has qualified her as a National Merit Scholarship semi-finalist.
She graduates in the spring with a coveted Honors Diploma.
Young Miss Case is a member of the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta and has won Academic Honors Awards for the past five years by maintaining an "A" average during each grading period.
She is currently enrolled in Advanced Placement English and calculus courses, is taking dual enrollment Spanish and will graduate with college credits in Spanish 101 and 102.
Twice a class president, Elizabeth has volunteered as a student aide at the Elementary Science Olympiad and takes an active role on the Matrix Student Ministries Leadership team at her church.
"Elizabeth plans to attend UAB and pursue a degree in the field of genetics," says Marcia Stallings, senior counselor. "This comes as no surprise given her academic promise, strength of character, and desire to help others."
Proud parents are Jim and Jan Case of Jacksonville.
Some applause, please ...
