Volunteers find good hospitality in Anniston

As an Alagasco employee asked for hard hats and safety glasses, a small, but important, group handed over the tools of the construction trade.

As the woman prepared to leave, Ann Boozer handed her two apples. "You get the healthy snacks now and the junk food later," Boozer said.

Boozer and Ridgely Smith, both of Anniston, are volunteering to work the Sponsors’ Hospitality Tent for this week’s Jimmy Carter Work Project. Situated in a shady area across from the food tent, the Hospitality Tent is the spot to harvest supplies and get a reprieve from the grueling sun.

"This is a place to come sit and cool off," Boozer said. "We’ve had several people that have overheated working out here."

With all the activity concentrated in one neighborhood, confusion can be common. The work site consisting of 35 houses and thousands of workers can be disorienting.

"Directing people to where they need to be is one of our jobs," Boozer said.

Corporations, such as Lowe’s and Whirlpool, are vital to making this week a reality. These companies are contributing to JCWP by donating products and employees’ labor.

"We are here to do special things for the sponsors," Smith said. "They are fine people, and we want to make things as comfortable for them as possible."

"This is our way to thank them for making it possible to build these houses."
