‘The Sound of Music’

CAST (Community Actors’ Studio Theatre) will present “The Sound of Music” Sept. 4-7, 11-14, and 18-21 at the McClellan Theatre, 100 Gamecock Drive, Anniston. Thursday, Friday and Saturday performances begin at 8 p.m. with the curtain rising at 2:30 p.m. for Sunday matinees.

Season tickets are $50 for adults and $30 for students with individual prices per show set at $20 per adult and $10 for students for musicals.

Group rates are available for parties of 12 or more individuals. All Thursday night shows are produced for “Pay-What-You -Want” admission.

Business counseling

The Jacksonville State University Small business Development Center, the Small Business Association and the Calhoun County Chamber of Commerce will offer free one-on-one counseling for prospective and existing small business owners from 1-4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 4, at the chamber office. Appointments are necessary and can be made by calling 782-5271.

Hatcher Fun Day

Fun Day, complete with hot dogs and games, will be from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, at Hatcher Avenue Baptist Church, 1311 Hatcher Ave. S. E.

Price book signing

Doug Price will sign copies of his action adventure book Lapside, the Holly Odyssey of Saint Nickolaas Claus as the Prince of Teal, at Jacksonville
State University home football games Sept. 6, Oct. 4 and 18 and Nov. 1 and 15 at Barnes and Noble Bookstore in the Student Commons Building, JSU. The book is 578 pages and goes from Medieval times to the 1990s.

What do Catholics believe?

St. Charles Catholic Church announces the beginning of adult Catholic instruction classes for those interested in learning about the Catholic Church or becoming a member. The program, Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA), is a comprehensive study of the Catholic Church, its beliefs and teachings. The RCIA classes meet each Tuesday during the school year beginning on Sept. 9. The RCIA program features wide-open discussion, scriptures and prayer.

Topics cover all things Catholic including is there only one true church, the role of Mary, the Pope, scriptures, the Catholic Mass, purgatory and the presence of Christ in the Eucharist.

RCIA is open to everyone. Classes meet in the Parish Life Center at 308 Seventh St., N.E. Call Father Alan Mackey, pastor, at 434-3238 for more information or to register.

Bridge lessons

Bridge lessons will begin on Tuesday, Sept. 9 from 1:30-3:30 p.m. at the Bridge Club of Anniston. Call Jeanne Coleman at 237-1898 for more information.

Children’s Market

First United Methodist Church will host the Children’s Market Consignment Sale Sept. 11-13, featuring items for children, teens, and expecting moms. White elephant sale

The Calhoun County Master Gardener Program is sponsoring a white elephant sale from 8 a.m.-noon Saturday, Sept. 13, at Cane Creek Community Garden, McClellan. A variety of household and other assorted items, including plants, will be for sale. No clothing will be available. Call the Calhoun County Extension Office at 237-1621 for more information.

DKG meeting

Sigma Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International will meet at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, in the president’s dining room on the Jacksonville State University campus. Beta State president Faye Bedwell and parliamentarian Jerry Sue Brannon will be guests. A brief business meeting will be followed by a dutch treat lunch.

Interested in horses?

Interested in Horses? Or do you know someone between 9 and 19 years of age who is interested? Even if you do not own a horse, you are invited to come join the fun and sign up for the 4-H Horse Club. For over a year, the Trailblazers 4-H Horse Club has been helping young people learn about horses and develop leadership skills.

Members and leaders would like to invite interested youth and their parents to come to the Circle C arena in Alexandria from 3-6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, for activities, to meet other young people and sign up for the club.

There will be demonstrations on grooming and barrel racing with 4-H’ers horses. Other activities include pin the tail on the donkey, horseshoes, feed sack races, stick-horse races, musical saddles, and a cake walk. McCarty book signing

Former Jacksonville State University student Danny J. McCarty, a member of the Calhoun County Christian Writers, will sign copies of his books, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, at Joy Christian Supplies on Pelham Road South. McCarty has published two novels of fiction, The Fifty-Two-Year-Old Rookie, about an older man who is given the chance to play professional baseball, and Alone in a Hidden Well about a 17-year-old boy who is reported missing after an after-school adventure.

Moms of Preschoolers

Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS) MOPS meets the third Monday of the month from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Covenant Life Ministries on the Alexandria Highway. The non-denominational organization is a program designed to nurture mothers with children from infancy through kindergarten. There is no admission charge. The next meeting is Sept. 15. Garden Club meeting

The Jacksonville Garden Club will meet at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17, at the Community Center. Anyone interested in joining is asked to call Klaus Duncan at 782-2991. Anyone who knows of a historic tree in Jacksonville is also asked to call Duncan.

Square dance classes

The Swinging Stars Square Dance Club will sponsor square dance classes at the Oxford Civic Center from 7-8:30 p.m. beginning Tuesday, Sept. 16. The first two lessons are free.

PFLAG meeting

PFLAG (Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) Anniston-Gadsden, a support group for GLBT and their families and friends, meets 6:30 p.m. the third Thursday of the month in Anniston. Meetings are confidential. The next meeting will be Sept. 18. Call 393-9119 for more information.

Gardening programs

“Lunch and Learn,” a series of free gardening programs sponsored by Calhoun County Master Gardeners will be presented from noon-1 p.m. on the fourth Wednesday at Cane Creek Community Garden, McClellan. Everyone is asked to bring a lunch. Door prizes will be given each session. The program on Sept. 24 will be Ohh, Honey!!. Call the County Extension office at 237-1621 for more information.

Swift watch

A Swift Night Out is a continent-wide effort to raise awareness about and encourage interest in chimney swifts. The project was originally inspired by the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh.

As summer draws to a close and the swifts have finished raising their young, these aerial acrobats begin to congregate in communal roosts prior to their migration in the fall.

Some roosts may consist of an extended family group of a half a dozen birds or so, but the larger sites can host hundreds or even thousands of swifts. A swift watch is set for 7 p.m. until dark Saturday, Sept. 27, at Longleaf Park at McClellan, north of Traffic Circle on Berman Road. Call Karen Allen at 820-5365 for more information.

FCE trips

The Calhoun County Homemakers and Community will go to Niagara Falls, Toronto and New England (including Boston and Martha’s Vineyard) for a fall foliage tour Sept. 24-Oct. 2. On Oct. 3 they will go to Birmingham for Southern Women’s Show, on Oct. 25 they will have a four-hour fall foliage cruise on the Tennessee River in Chattanooga which includes a buffet lunch and entertainment, and Nov. 13-17 to Branson, Mo., for shows including Daniel O’Donnell and Tobutchi, and a showboat dinner cruise. An overnight trip to Christmas at Callaway Gardens which includes a tour of the gardens, dinner, breakfast and buffet, Fantasy in Lights and Warm Springs will be Dec. 9-10. Travelers will see the Rockettes perform in Birmingham on Dec. 13. Everyone is invited to register for a Panama Canal cruise now for discounts. $15 fashion show

The Calhoun Christian Women’s Job Corps will host its 2nd annual Fifteen-Dollar Fashion Show to give women ideas for dressing for interviews on Saturday, Sept. 27, at Greenbrier Road Baptist Church, 1235 Greenbrier Rd., Anniston, beginning with brunch at 10 a.m.

Women will model complete outfits that they created with the total cost being $15. These outfits will illustrate affordable, conservative fashions to CWJC participants and will give them ideas on how to dress for interviews and color coordination and accessorizing.

A silent auction will be held in conjunction with the show The outfits from the show, along with donated items from local businesses, will be auctioned. General admission is $15. All proceeds will go to fund the ministries of Calhoun CWJC, which seeks new direction for women’s lives through training, mentoring, Bible study, and enthusiastic support. Help for animals

Secondhand Tails Thrift Store, 6500 McClellan Blvd., offers a wide variety of merchandise including clothing, housewares and gift items and offers weekly specials. The Christmas Room opens Oct. 1.

Donations, except for large items, are appreciated. All sales support the Animal Shelter.

Church anniversary

The Jacksonville State University Gospel Choir directed by Dr. Myrtice Collins will perform at the 121st anniversary of the Rising Star United Methodist Church of Hobson City at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct 5, at the Anniston City Meeting Center, 1615 Noble St. The event will include a countywide leadership and education summit.
