Candidates’ forumThe Jacksonville Merchants Association and Alabama Communities of Excellence will host a candidate’s forum from 6-9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 14, at the Community Center. Those attending can meet and question the candidates who are running for offices in the city, including mayor, City Council and Jacksonville City Schools Board of Education. John R Whaley will moderate and each candidate will have an opportunity to state his platform. Afterward candidates will answer questions from the audience.
Soccer registration
Parks and recreation’s soccer registration for boys and girls 5-13 will be from 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday through Friday until Aug. 14 or until each age group is full at the Community Center. Homerun Derby
Wellborn Baseball for Youth will hold the first Homerun Derby at 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 16. The event is sponsored by Wellborn Baseball for Youth and Dicks Sporting Goods in Oxford. Registration will be from 3-7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 15. Players in T-ball, AA, AAA and majors are invited to sign up. Prizes will be given to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners in each age group. Library board meeting

What do Catholics believe?
St. Charles Catholic Church announces the beginning of adult Catholic instruction classes for those interested in learning about the Catholic Church or becoming a member. The program, Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA), is a comprehensive study of the Catholic Church, its beliefs and teachings. The RCIA classes meets each Tuesday during the school year beginning on Sept. 9. The RCIA program features wide open discussion, scriptures and prayer.
Topics cover all things Catholic including is there only one true church, the role of Mary, the Pope, scriptures, the Catholic Mass, purgatory and the presence of Christ in the Eucharist.

FCE trips
The Calhoun County Homemakers and Community will go to Niagara Falls, Toronto and New England (including Boston and Martha’s Vineyard) for a fall foliage tour Sept. 24-Oct. 2. On Oct. 3 they will go to Birmingham for Southern Women’s Show, on Oct. 25 they will have a four-hour fall foliage cruise on the Tennessee River in Chattanooga which includes a buffet lunch and entertainment, and Nov. 13-17 to Branson, Mo., for shows including Daniel O’Donnell and Tobutchi, and a showboat dinner cruise. Help the JCOC
The Jacksonville Community Outreach Center has a large number of applications asking for help for students this year. The JCOC is asking everyone to either purchase school supplies and leave them at a church or drop them off at the JCOC, behind McDonald’s. Checks can be made payable to JCOC and marked “school supplies.” The handing out of school supplies has already begun by JCOC and will continue until all of the children are assisted.
The JCOC will also provide $25 vouchers for kindergarten through seventh grade children for shoes, socks and underwear. The vouchers will have to be redeemed at the service department of the Jacksonville Wal-Mart.
Families must reside within the Jacksonville 36265 area. Each family requesting assistance must have proof of Jacksonville residency (a current piece of mail received at their home address). P. O. boxes will not be accepted. They also must have photo ID and social security cards for each family member living in the household. Call JCOC at 435-1891 for more information. Due to limited space inside JCOC and the large number of clients the center will be trying to assist, do not bring children when coming in for school supplies.
$15 fashion show
The Calhoun Christian Women’s Job Corps will host its 2nd annual Fifteen-Dollar Fashion Show to give women ideas for dressing for interviews on Saturday, Sept. 27, at Greenbrier Road Baptist Church, 1235 Greenbrier Rd., Anniston, beginning with brunch at 10 a.m. Women will model complete outfits that they created with the total cost being $15. The Alabama State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) can help seniors understand Medicare benefits, determine which Medicare prescription drug plan best fits their needs and answer questions about Medigap, long-term care insurance policies and other health insurance programs.
