Forney chapter gives crosses to SCV

The Gen. William Henry Forney Chapter No. 468 of the United Daughters of the Confederacy presented two members of the Gen. George “Tige” Anderson Camp No. 453, Sons of the Confederate Veterans, with Military Service Crosses at a meeting on Tuesday, July 26.

The Cross of Military Service is presented to those who by faithful devotion and patriotic military service to their country in time of war have exemplified courage and loyalty which reflects honor upon themselves as well as upon their Confederate ancestors.

Recorder of Military Crosses chairman Ruth S. Mason and president Sonja M. Randle presented Elurd “Pete” Sexton with a World War II Cross of Military Service for his service in the U. S. Navy. He joined the Navy in 1945 and served in the Pacific aboard the USS Amsterdam. His Confederate ancestor was his great-grandfather Pvt. Seaborn Sexton, Co. K. 48th Regiment Alabama Infantry.

Wayne Jennings received the Vietnam Cross of Military. After joining the U. S. Army in 1969, he served in Vietnam and the United States. Pvt. David Jennings, Co. D. Alabama Partisan Rangers, was Jennings’ great-grandfather and Confederate ancestor. The World War II Cross of Military Service Cross was presented posthumously to Wayne Jennings for his father Robert B. L. Jennings who joined the U. S. Army in 1942 and served in England, North Africa, Italy, France and Germany.

Wayne Jennings was also presented a posthumous World War II Military Service Cross for his uncle, Gerald Jennings who joined the Army in 1943 and was a gunner on a B24 while stationed in England. The Jennings’ brothers’ Confederate ancestor was their grandfather Pvt. David Jennings, Co. D Alabama Partisan Rangers.
