She started work at what was then called Jacksonville Hospital on April 29, 1979, the day the building opened and continued to work as ownership of the hospital changed hands three times and its name was altered to Jacksonville Medical Center.

Mildred Watts began her time in housekeeping at the hospital on the floor, cleaning the rooms of patients and the nurses’ station, but has worked in every area of the building during her 28-plus years.

Thursday afternoon, Aug. 7, a large crowd of hospital workers, family and friends gathered in the cafeteria at Jacksonville Medical Center to celebrate those years of work and to wish Watts the best in her retirement.

With good-natured age jokes sprinkled throughout the room and lots of hugs, Watts’ co-workers let her know how much she has meant to them through the years and how she would be missed.
