Mama Tompkins singing will take place Saturday at Community CenterA tradition since 1985, the annual Mama Tompkins Gospel Singing will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, at the Community Center, 501 Alexandria Road. Singers from eight states will attend.
The event is free and there are plenty of cushioned chairs. An added attraction this year is the combined choirs of Piedmont Hughes Street Congregational Holiness, Nances Creek Congregational Holiness and Tredegar Chapel Congregational Holiness churches.
They will be singing selections from the Cleveland Tenn., Red Book. Also singing will be the Foothills Quartet of Piedmont, James and Judy Tompkins of Jacksonville and the Garner Family of Bremen, Ga. Peggy Garner is the granddaughter of Mama Tompkins.

School supplies are being issued at JCOC
Jacksonville Christian Outreach Center, 26 W. Francis St., behind McDonald’s, is issuing school supplies for children of low-income families. Families must reside within the Jacksonville 36265 area.
Each family requesting assistance must have proof of Jacksonville residency (a current piece of mail received at their home address). P. O. boxes will not be accepted. They also must have photo ID and social security cards for each family member living in the household.

CAST tickets
CAST Theatre’s season tickets for adults are $50. With the “Sanders’ Family Christmas” ticket included the adult price is $65. Season tickets for students are $30, but with the Sanders’ Family Christmas” ticket included the season ticket is $35. It runs Dec. 4-21 and is the sequel to Smoke on the Mountain.
Other performances include the Rogers and Hammerstein classic The Sound of Music, Sept. 4-21; The Lady with All the Answers, based on the letters and autobiography of advice columnist Ann Landers, Oct. 3-Nov. 9; Ken Ludwig’s Leading Ladies, Jan. 29-Feb. 15; and the final production Blues to Broadway, an original musical revue created by CAST artistic director Kimberly Dobbs and musical director and conductor at the Alliance Theatre Company in Atlanta Michael Fauss, April 23-May 10.
All CAST productions are held in the McClellan Theatre, 100 Gamecock Drive, Anniston. Thursday, Friday and Saturday productions begin at 8 p.m. with the curtain rising at 2:30 p.m. for Sunday matinees.
Group rates are available for parties of 12 or more individuals.
All Thursday night shows are produced for “pay-what-you-want” admission.

Alabama author Daniel Wallace will visit the Public Library of Anniston-Calhoun County at 6 p.m. Thursday, July 31, to speak and sign books. The event is free. Wallace, author of Big Fish, has formerly been featured at Jacksonville State University’s On the Brink conference. The paperback version of Wallace’s latest book, Mr. Sebastian and the Negro Magician, has been released this month. He is also the author of The Watermelon King and Ray in Reverse. Golf classic
The 2nd annual White Plains Over the Hill Gang Golf Classic will be Friday, Aug. 1, at Cane Creek Golf Course. Sign in is at noon, lunch is at 1 p.m. and the shotgun start is at 2 p .m. The three-man scramble is 18 holes.
