Sigma Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International met April 12 at Kitty Stone Elementary School. President Sydney Long presided. Martha Tredaway served refreshments.Using the book To Everything There Is a Season by C. R. Gibson, Janette Fulmer gave the moment of meditation. She closed with “Let me grow young as I grow old, Lord; but most of all, let me grow” by Jean Reynolds Davis. She also led in the reading of the Beta State collect written by Ottie Huff, a past state president from Birmingham.
Joy Borden presented “Jesus Loves Me” in the report from the music and related arts committee. She gave an account of the story behind the song. The minutes and the treasurer’s report were accepted.
Mrs. Fulmer reported that Sigma Chapter donated $322 to the Afghanistan Teacher Training Program sponsored by UNICEF. Mrs. Long reported that five members, Juanita Badgett, Suzanne Hobbs, Sydney Long, Dot Padgett and Sandra Sudduth, attended the District II meeting at Woodville Baptist Church in Woodville on March 15. Mrs. Sudduth was presenter for Women in Government, and Mrs. Badgett was presenter for the music portion of program of worker. She also led the music for the general sessions with Mrs. Long accompanying her at the piano.
Mary Elizabeth Johnson, with the assistance of Dr. Denise Richardson, selected Ariel Janese Jackson to be the recipient of the Edith Allen recruitment grant-in-aid for the fall. Ms. Jackson is a Jacksonville State University sophomore studying elementary education.
Miriam Green installed the new officers, Suzanne Hobbs, president; Dot Padgett, vice president; Juanita Badgett, secretary; Janet Self, treasurer, and Sherry Butler, parliamentarian.
Honoring the 12 state founders, Juanita Badgett, Miriam Green, Sherry Butler and Dot Padgett gave a short biographical sketch of each founder and placed a red rose, the society flower, in a crystal vase in their memory. Local chapters have adopted all gravesites except the one in Texas. Sigma has adopted the graveside of Dr. Ruth L. Higgins in Green Lawn Cemetery in Columbus, Ohio. A marker noting they were Beta State founders has been placed on each interment site.
The meeting closed with Barbara Carter receiving the door prize and the group singing the Delta Kappa Gamma song.
