Movie review: What Happens in Vegas
|
It wasn't the opening line, but it set the tone for What Happens in Vegas. As Ashton Kutcher's character Jack Fuller puts it, "What happens in Vegas, you pay for when you get home." This is obvious after a wild mix-up at a hotel and many drinks later, when Joy McNally (Cameron Diaz) finds herself in Fuller's bed, naked ... and married to him. Themed a romantic comedy, What Happens in Vegas would fare better as just a comedy. How much romance can you expect from two married strangers?! Aside from the fact that most of the physical interaction occurs on the night that the two wed, you shouldn't expect much affection between the two — especially after Fuller wins a $3 million jackpot with McNally's quarter. The couple wants an annulment (and to split the cash) but the judge doesn't see fit for the two to make a mockery of the sanctity of marriage, so he orders them into counseling. If they can't make it six months, neither of them will benefit from the winnings. While the movie may be well received because of the similarity to today's culture, the plot made light of several issues facing society. If the couple will work towards getting acquainted and saving their marriage, the judge will grant a divorce and split the funds equally — if not, they may never see the money. For the love of money the couple agrees to disagree. Lake Bell and Steve Hader provide most of the comic relief as the couple's scheming friends. "If I could kill someone with my mind, it would be you," said Bell and she illustrates this well as Hader continues to make passes at her. This really isn't the best romantic comedy, but it is original. Better make it a Blockbuster night for this one. |
