Cassandra Norton, a graduate of Alexandria High School, recently signed a scholarship to play volleyball for the Snead State Parsons in Boaz in the fall. She is pictured with high school coach Sarah Wheeler and Snead coach Dustin Cothran at the signing.
The Mason Nunez Memorial Fund has been set up at BB&T bank at 11th Street and Quintard Avenue. Mason passed away in June. He started his adventure at Saks Youth Ball Field in a stroller. The memorial fund is to help make improvements at the Saks Youth Ball Field with a playground, better dug-outs, and a monument to celebrate the life of Mason and those he touched. Contributions may be made at the bank or by calling 237-5844.
Jacksonville State University baseball summer showcase camps are to be held from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Registration is at 8 a.m. today, Sunday and Aug. 23. The camp is open to high school athletes in the graduating classes of 2008-2011. Along with a showcase portion of the camp, instruction on all phases of the game will be included with this camp. The JSU coaching staff, college coaches and professional scouts will also be working and evaluating at the camp. The cost is $99. If a camper attends the "Summer Showcase Camp," he will receive a $20 discount for the upcoming JSU fall league that starts at the beginning of September. Heflin Baptist Church Upward flag football and cheerleading for children in grades K5 through grade 6 is to hold practices for one hour on Tuesdays or Thursdays with games to be played at 8 and 9:15 a.m. on Saturdays on Almon Street in front of the Kellwood Outlet. The awards night celebration is to be Oct. 4 with illusionist Jerome Rewis of Dalton, Ga., as the special guest.
Jacksonville State University baseball is to conduct a high school fall league starting the week after Labor Day. The league is open to all 9-12 graders.
The fall league will be divided into two sessions. The first will run on Tuesdays (Sept. 2-Sept. 30.) The second session will run on Sundays (Sept. 7-Oct 12.) There will not be any fall league games on Oct. 5 the day of the race at Talladega. Each session will include five weeks.
The first week will consist of a tryout and evaluation in order to create equal teams. The first week will be followed with four weeks of games. The cost is $150 for one session. The cost is $280 for both a Tuesday and Sunday session. Also another $20 discount will be given with the attendance of the Aug. 16, 17 or Aug. 20 high school summer showcase.
