DETAILS: Boxing’s biggest star, undefeated Floyd “Money” Mayweather, and its newest star, WBC Welterweight World Champion “Vicious” Victor Ortiz, will align their super powers when they meet in “STAR POWER: Mayweather vs. Ortiz.”
The undefeated and former pound-for-pound king Mayweather will be returning to the ring after a 16-month layoff while Ortiz defends his WBC Welterweight World Championship title for the first time. He captured the title against Andre Berto last April 16, 2011.
Star Power, promoted by Mayweather Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions, and sponsored by Cerveza Tecate, DeWALT and AT&T, falls on Mexican Independence Day weekend.
I recently discussed about the upcoming big rematch of Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez on November 2011 (you can read at my Pacquiao vs. Marquez post for full details of the match). Then, I have read that Floyd Mayweather Jr. just get out from his retirement and decided to get a fight this year against the American boxer, Victor Ortiz who is currently the WBC Welterweight world champion. Everyone reacted (of course that includes me) and the fight raises controversies. They even raised the old question, “why not fight Pacquiao?” One of my friend who is a boxing fanatic too, asked, “I thought he is resting from boxing, but why when he heard that Manny Pacquiao is fighting Marquez, then he decided to go out and fight too…”, he said while smiling. ”And they even set the date earlier that Manny’s fight.” he added.
Well, Floyd Mayweather Jr. can’t avoid these such remarks. He started making some noise when he intrigued the Filipino boxer by releasing some controversial comments about Pacquiao and die hard Pacman fans will surely shout back from his claims.
Now, regarding the Mayweather vs. Ortiz welterweight fight, the reasons why I will recommend that you should watch it despite this several controversial reactions from some boxing fans is simply because I find it very entertaining and feel that Mayweather can be beaten by Ortiz. Victor Ortiz is a southpaw (like Pacquiao). He is young and tagged as “vicious” because of his offensive and aggressive stance. His professional records and boxing performance are impressive which is comparable to Manny Pacquiao’s.

Straight from his training camp, it was reported that Victor Ortiz is eyeing to knockout Mayweather in the first three rounds of their encounter.
For a boxer like Ortiz, he has everything to gain and almost nothing to lose. He’s young and he will go places, even if he suffers defeat in the hands of Mayweather in September. But if he wins, that will mean a ticket to box with the world’s pound-for-pound king of the world, Manny “The Pacman” Pacquiao. Though he and Pacquiao are good friends, the fight will catapult him into full stardom especially if he wins against Pacquiao.
The undefeated American boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. seems to have finally decided to have a comeback inside the boxing ring as he decided to fight the Mexican-American boxer, Victor Ortiz. It was almost more than a year off since Mayweather fought inside the ring and his last bout was against the American boxer Shane Mosley where he won over Mosley through unanimous decision. Meanwhile, Victor Ortiz is the current WBC World Welterweight Champion.
Actually, world boxing fans are expecting Floyd Mayweather Jr. to fight the pound-for-pound king Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao of the Philippines. But he seemed scared to stain his reputation of being an undefeated boxer and he doesn’t want Pacquiao to be the first fighter to put him into shame. Mayweather was actually stripped recently because of his pound-for-pound ranking by Ring Magazine after failing to fight for one year, avoiding to fight the legendary Manny Pacquiao. Because of that, he stopped from fighting in boxing and was stripped.
However, good news to all Mayweather fans that he is going back to the ring this year. Mayweather was reported to have agreed to face the newly-crowned WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz on September 17 at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
It was said that a few days before the Pacquiao vs Mosley fight held last May 7 at the MGM Grand, Mayweather was already reported to be choosing between Victor Ortiz and Miguel Cotto for his next boxing fight. Also, during the recent fight between Ortiz and Berto, Mayweather was also seen in the audience watching the fight live, probably learning Ortiz’s every move so as for his preparation of fighting him.
